adirondacking

Yes Memorial Day Weekend is over, but I’ll always have amazing memories from it.   Also scars from all the bug bites, but it was worth it.

I love nature, but I’m kind of an indoor girl most of the time.  I don’t hike every week, I don’t swim a ton (but would love to) I like wearing platform pumps 75% of the time.   The other 25% I dream about living in the Adirondacks and wearing flip flops forever.   Love it there.

Manfriend, kiddo and I headed up north for the long weekend and as soon as we arrived we were put to work helping finish a chicken coop.   I honestly never thought I’d help build a coop, but never say never!   Those chickens have a lovely place to roam now.

After my Bob Villa moment we went off to visit some of the most beautiful horses I’ve ever seen.  Amazing, and intimidating.

There’s always fun discoveries to be made.  We found this little cabin (complete with a bed) in the middle of the woods.

It was the perfect weekend for fires, wine and flip flops.

There are so many bodies of water to take advantage of in the Adirondack Park.   I got to swim a decent amount, and just be lazy with my toes in the water.

We hit up lower and middle Saranac on an awesome boat trip.  I got to open and close locks, again, I never thought that was something I’d do/be excited about.

We had a pretty easy going boat captain.

Wrapped up our long weekend in an old growth forest.  300-400 year old trees?  Hello.   This was also a mosquito buffet zone, but it was cool, we got to see this!

So there’s my Adirondack snapshot.   I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again.  I love living in the Capital Region, there’s tons to do, but when you’re looking for a quick getaway you’re in the perfect location.   2 1/2 hours south – you’re in the greatest city ever (NYC.)   2 1/2 hours north and you’re in the most awe inspiring nature in the country (in my opinion.)

Are you there winter?   No?  Ok, that’s cool.

The mild winter has been fun, but I know my kid has been pissed.   He’s a kid, of course he wants tons of snow!    This grass in February stuff isn’t cool.   To give him something of a little winter experience his dad and I brought him up to Saranac Lake this weekend.   It’s the Adirondacks, they must be slammed with snow?   Nope.   But it was still pretty cool.

Manfriend’s brother helps construct the ice castle for The Saranac Lake Winter Carnival so we got to get a little preview of the awesomeness:

Really amazing stuff.   I believe the Winter Carnival kicks off this weekend and runs through next.   Weather permitting the ice castle should be open for the next 30 days.   The theme this year is space invasion and there are a lot of amazing space craft ice creations…2 1/2 hours away from Albany…definitely worth the drive.

After we checked out the castle we wandered into Lake Placid for a bit..walked out onto the lake, enjoyed the day.   Then manfriend’s bro took us to a relatively secluded frozen lake, it was pretty breathtaking at dusk (sorry for the choppiness, it’s a crappy panorama app on my iPhone):

Not a ton of snow in the Adirondacks right now, but still beautiful to see.   That’s what I love about living in Albany.   Jump in the car, drive about 2 1/2 hours south and you’re in the city.   Drive about 2 1/2 hours north, you’re deep in the Adirondacks.   NYS may annoy the crap out of me sometimes, but it’s got range.

For Memorial Day Weekend we went to visit manfriend’s brother in the Adirondacks.   It was an amazing trip.   Manfriend’s brother hooked us up with this amazing cabin in the middle of nowhere.   Not gonna lie, the middle of nowhere part kind of freaked me out but here I am a week later missing the isolation.   I took a ton of great photos but of course I’ve misplaced my camera so here a few of my iPhone shots.

From the cabin’s porch:

it was a definite flip flop weekend:

A spring we hiked to

and of course no camping trip would be complete without a campfire:

Amazing weekend with the fam but of course being in the Adirondacks means some bug bites:

I’m still looking for a good bug bite remedy.   White vinegar?   Aloe?  Oatmeal and yogurt?   If you have a great big bite remedy let me know, I can’t stop itching !!!!

schroon lake

If you’re driving up the Northway to “the lake” you’re probably going to Lake George, every once in awhile we head a little further north to Schroon Lake, if you think this pic is pretty you should see it in the summer.

The beach was closed but we were still able to do ample exploring and relaxing, how amazing is this view?

The water was very high, I’m not an environmental expert but this pic kinda sums up my statement (half submerged dock):

We still had time to wander up the shore and enjoy the not quite chilly May afternoon,

I even took a little risk and popped my toes in the super chilly water

(I love that my feet are so pale they actually look like they’re glowing.)

Schroon Lake is a definite visit in the summer, seriously, you won’t be disappointed.
